Lifelong Wellness Application Paper
Write a paragraph on each of the following:
1. What did you learn about “lifelong wellness” from taking this General Education class?
”Lifelong Wellness” can sound a little intimidating at times. Exercising is good for you, it’s a known fact, but to continually be “physically healthy” can be a little difficult. It can get repetitious, but with this course one can see that working out and having “lifelong wellness” isn’t just about running on a treadmill for an hour and lifting 1,000 pound weights. There are many activities that can go towards having a healthy life no matter what your age.
2. How would you apply this information to your life?
I hope to find more creative and fun ways to keep in shape. Heaven knows I need it! I really enjoy anything with rhythm as I am extremely uncoordinated with bats or rackets and think weight lifting is retarded.
3. What is your intention to continue to practice what you have learned in your life and why?
I would just like to continue dancing. I love it anyway and now that I know a lot more I can join in at the Arts Center instead of just waiting for swing to come on. It’s also helped me meet more people to be able to spend time with who also know some similar moves. The pressure has eased off now that everyone kind of understands that it is a thing you need to learn.
4. General ideas for improving this course?
I really enjoyed what I experienced. I liked it when (at the end of class) there would be music playing and we could all just practice the moves we learned that day so if for some reason I didn’t catch on, it provided me with a little bit of one on one time for assistance.

For my Social Dance class I went (on a date) to the Murray Arts Center to participate in some local dance lessons and then to practice what I have learned. We started out with the lessons across the street doing some waltz. The instructor was a more matured woman with salt and pepper hair. She reminded me a lot of someone who would be on Steel Magnolias, just minus the accent. There were people of all ages there and towards the end they had a live band playing in another room. We started with the basic waltz and then we formed into a circle and started to learn turning box steps. (which are my favorite!) My date struggled at first with the changing of direction, but he caught on soon enough.
After the lesson we went to the building where they normally hold swing dancing. Since I have some experience with swing we danced for a while and then they would randomly throw different genres into the mix. The one I remember the most was the Cha Cha. There was this couple there that really knew what they were doing. He just lead her around the room like it was nothing. They never messed up and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a routine. He knew how to lead and she knew how to follow. It was awesome to watch them. She even had the t-strap ballroom shoes. (which I want SO bad!) I tried to do what I could with my date, he picked it up quite well! But I didn’t look anything like them, even if I had been with someone who really knew what they were doing! Dancing is so beautiful and I love how each dance almost has its own “personality characteristics” that go along with it. It’s definitely fun, especially for someone who likes acting, like me!
I am pretty sure I will always dance, but I need to do it more often that way I don’t get winded so easily. I used to be in great shape (I’m sure everyone can say that at some point in their life) but I definitely could use toning up a bit more and being healthier in general. In the future I would love to do something like Zumba or Pilates, something with music and rhythm, not just the weights on the floor.
Yay for dancing. And yay for getting to go out on a few dates.
