Time Magazine’s Person of the Year: The Protestor.
America has always had moments of drastic change and if there’s one quality American’s have, its determination. Starting from the rebellion of the Tea Act of 1733 to the Occupy Wall Street movement happening now, Americans have fought for what they want. The beauty of America is our freedom. Freedom to speak, freedom to vote, freedom to work, gain an education, freedom. But sometimes we feel as if our freedom is not as “free” as we wish it to be.
In the article explaining Time’s Magazine’s Person of the Year’s choice, it mainly talks about the things happening in the Middle East, but I decided to apply it to our area of the world, which has also been having many protests.
Recently, not only America but areas all over the world are becoming intolerant of the injustices they feel are being put upon them, usually by government. I feel grateful to be a part of a generation that has so much passion to get what they feel they deserve, but at the same time I feel as if many are misinformed.
If you look at history, America has had amazing leaders in its past such as the infamous George Washington, the honest man Abraham Lincoln, and the believer Martin Luther King Junior. America has also had some not so great leaders such as (in my opinion) President Polk and the later Benedict Arnold. (after a moment or two of greatness) But history proves a good leader can make all of the different in change. Because of this, I feel as if the people of America are scattered all over the place. There is not one person to speak up and be a leader. There are no lists of demands. All we know is that many Americans are unhappy about the economy, the higher classes of society, police brutality and the government ignoring the needs of the people.
Government can be so incredibly tainted now a days that the American people have a hard time trusting anyone in a “voted” position after witnessing scandals and injustices across the board. Once again, the media deceives us with advertisements of inaccuracy, single sidedness, and propaganda. We the people need and are encouraged to voice our opinion, but we are not banding together for the change we want. We need to gain knowledge of history and be able to apply it to our modern day needs and movements. History can be a great tool if used.
